007 film aims at record

After 50 years, 23 films and seven leading men, James Bond is still poised to be No. 1 at the box office.

The latest installment, “Skyfall,” is set to shatter records for the 007 franchise in its US debut.

Hollywood analysts expect the film to take in north of $75 million in its opening weekend, topping the previous $67.5 million record set by “Quantum of Solace” in 2008.

Phil Contrino, vice president and chief analyst at Boxoffice.com, predicts the Sony-backed film will take in a whopping $85 million over the weekend.

“One of the main reasons it’s expected to do well is that Sony has been pushing it really hard with very aggressive marketing and the trailers got a great reaction on Facebook and Twitter,” Contrino said.

“It’s been four years since the last one, and we’re seeing what happens when a Bond movie opens with social media by its side. It’s huge,” he said.

The movie is slated to open in 3,505 locations in North America this weekend after taking in $320 million overseas in just two weeks.

“Skyfall” starring Daniel Craig, cost an estimated $200 million to make.
